How to Calculate Work Hours
Enter the date, clock-in time, clock-out time, and unpaid break for each shift. The calculator measures the elapsed shift, deducts the break, and combines every valid entry into a weekly total. Add another row when a day has a split shift or multiple work periods.
Work-hours formula
Worked time = Clock-out − Clock-in − Unpaid break
Example: 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes elapsed. After a 30-minute unpaid break, the result is 8 hours worked.
Weekly Timesheets, Split Shifts, and Overnight Work
The seven-row starting timesheet is only a convenient template. You can edit each date, remove rows, or add extra shifts. If clock-out is earlier than clock-in, the calculator treats the shift as crossing midnight into the next day.
- Use Add shift for a second shift on the same date.
- Enter unpaid breaks in minutes; leave paid breaks included in work time.
- Use notes for a project, location, client, or shift label.
- Save locally for a later visit or export the complete week as CSV.
Regular Hours, Overtime, and Gross Pay
Choose weekly overtime, daily plus weekly overtime, or no overtime classification. With daily plus weekly selected, daily overtime is calculated first and the weekly threshold is then applied only to the remaining regular hours. This prevents one hour from being counted as overtime twice.
Adding an hourly rate produces a gross-pay estimate: regular hours use the base rate and overtime hours use the base rate multiplied by your selected factor. Laws and employment agreements can use different workweeks, thresholds, double-time rules, rounding, premiums, and exceptions. Treat the result as a planning aid, not an official wage statement.
Paid and Unpaid Breaks
Only enter time that should be deducted. An unpaid meal break usually reduces worked hours, while a paid rest break normally remains part of paid time. Your employer's policy and local rules determine whether a break is paid, required, rounded, or recorded separately.
