How the Pomodoro Timer Works
Choose a task, start a focused work phase, then take the scheduled break when the countdown ends. The default cycle uses 25 minutes of focus, a 5-minute short break, and a 15-minute long break after four completed focus sessions. Every duration and the long-break interval can be changed.
1. Focus
Work on one defined task and defer unrelated interruptions.
2. Break
Pause, move, rest your eyes, and let attention recover.
3. Repeat
Complete the cycle and use a longer break at the chosen interval.
Choosing a Focus Duration
Twenty-five minutes is a practical starting point, not a requirement. Shorter sessions may help when beginning a difficult task, while 40–60 minute blocks may suit work that needs more setup or deeper continuity. A useful session is long enough to make progress but short enough that the next break remains believable.
Breaks are part of the method, not a failure to stay productive. Use them to change posture, look away from the screen, or briefly move. Adjust the pattern when a task, health need, or workplace schedule requires something different.
Background Timing and Cycle Rules
The timer stores a target end time and recalculates the remaining duration instead of assuming that every browser interval fires exactly once per second. This helps the countdown recover when a background tab is throttled. Device sleep and power-saving rules can still delay the moment a completion alert is delivered.
A focus cycle is counted only when its countdown finishes. Skipping moves to the next phase without increasing the completed-focus total. After the selected number of completed focus phases, the timer schedules a long break.
Sound and Browser Notifications
The completion chime is generated directly with the Web Audio API, so the tool does not load a third-party sound file or need music licensing. Browsers normally require a click before audio is allowed; use Test sound if needed. Notifications are optional and are shown only after you request and grant browser permission. After enabling them, use Test notification before starting a longer session.
If the test is requested but no alert appears, confirm that your operating system also allows notifications for the browser you are currently using. Site permission can be enabled while Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox remains blocked at the device level. Focus or Do Not Disturb modes, battery-saving rules, private browsing, and managed-device policies can also suppress alerts. Keep the browser open because this timer does not send remote push notifications after the browser is closed.
Keyboard Controls
When focus is not inside an input, press Space to start or pause, R to reset the current phase, and S to skip. Buttons remain available for touch screens and assistive technologies.
