How to Build a Professional Resume

Start with the role you want and keep every section relevant to that goal. Add clear contact details, a short professional summary, recent experience in reverse chronological order, education, and focused skill groups. Projects, certifications, and languages are useful when they provide evidence that supports the job application.

Use specific outcomes instead of listing duties alone. A strong experience bullet explains what you changed, how you did it, and the result. Keep dates and punctuation consistent, avoid repeating the same skill in several sections, and review the final PDF at normal zoom before sending it.

Choose the Right Resume Template

Choose a layout that matches the amount of content and the tone of the role. Minimal and Classic keep the presentation restrained, Compact helps with longer histories, and Bold or Creative gives the header more visual emphasis. The preview and downloaded PDF use the same layout, so check page breaks after changing templates.

Modern

Bold header with photo and clean rule lines

Classic

Traditional centered header

Minimal

Clean whitespace and a distraction-free layout

Compact

Dense layout that fits more on each page

Executive

Sidebar layout with an accent panel

Creative

Color-band header with modern flair

Professional

Serif headings with corporate polish

Bold

Large name with a strong accent bar

Should You Add a Profile Photo?

Resume-photo expectations vary by country and industry. Photos are common in parts of Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, and in some hospitality or personal-branding roles. They are often omitted from corporate applications in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. Follow the employer's instructions and local hiring conventions.

When a photo is appropriate, use a recent head-and-shoulders image with even lighting and a simple background. Rounded frames feel more contemporary; rectangular frames provide more portrait space and suit formal photographs.

Write Stronger Experience Bullets

Less specific

“Responsible for managing social media accounts and helping with marketing campaigns.”

More specific

“Increased qualified website traffic by 32% in six months through a weekly content calendar and campaign testing.”
