This is a planning estimate. Your instructor's rules for rounding, grade curves, dropped scores, late penalties, and extra credit determine the official result.

How to Calculate Your Grade

For a points-based assessment, divide the points you earned by the total possible points and multiply by 100. The result can then be matched to the letter-grade cutoffs in your syllabus.

Points grade formula

Grade % = (Points Earned ÷ Points Possible) × 100

Example: 42 points earned out of 50 possible gives (42 ÷ 50) × 100 = 84.00%.

How Weighted Grades Work

In a weighted course, assignments, quizzes, projects, and exams do not necessarily contribute equally. Multiply each category percentage by its course weight, then add those contributions.

Category contribution

A 90% assignment average with a 30% weight contributes 27 percentage points: 90 × 0.30 = 27.

Current grade

The current grade is normalized across completed categories, so ungraded future work does not count as zero.

Calculate the Grade Needed on a Final Exam

The target planner uses your current grade and completed course weight to find the average needed across all remaining work. If the required score is above 100%, the selected target needs extra credit or a change in the entered grades or weights.

In the detailed tracker, leave earned points blank for an ungraded final exam or project. Its weight remains available for target planning without lowering your current grade.

Before Using the Result

  • Copy category weights and grading cutoffs from your official syllabus.
  • Enter possible points even when an assessment has not been graded.
  • Check whether extra credit is capped or placed in a separate category.
  • Confirm how dropped scores, late penalties, and rounding are handled.
