Check the receipt. Taxes, service charges, mandatory gratuities, discounts, and local tipping customs can be different.

How the Tip Calculator Works

The calculator separates the pre-tax subtotal, tax, and tip before it divides the final amount. If the bill already includes tax, entering the tax rate allows the tool to estimate the original subtotal. If tax still needs to be added, the entered bill is treated as the pre-tax subtotal.

Core calculation

Final total = Bill before tip + Tip + Rounding adjustment

Tip equals the selected tip basis multiplied by the tip rate. Exact shares are distributed to the nearest cent so the displayed per-person amounts add back to the final total.

Tip Before or After Tax

A pre-tax tip is based only on goods and services. An after-tax tip also applies the percentage to tax, so it produces a slightly larger gratuity. Local customs differ, and a restaurant may print suggested amounts using either method. Choose the basis you intend rather than assuming every receipt uses the same convention.

Service charges and mandatory gratuities should normally be treated as part of the bill before deciding whether to add another voluntary tip. Check the receipt wording because a service charge is not always distributed in the same way as a voluntary gratuity.

Equal and Weighted Bill Splits

Equal split: everyone pays the same share. This is quickest when meals or shared costs were broadly similar.
Weighted split: each person receives a share value. A weight of 2 pays twice as much as a weight of 1 without itemizing every receipt line.

A weighted split is a proportional shortcut, not an item-by-item receipt audit. If exact orders, discounts, or tax rules differ by item, calculate those individual amounts first and use their values as the basis for a more detailed settlement.

Understanding Rounding

Exact mode keeps the calculated total and distributes any remaining cent so the shares reconcile. Rounding the group total changes the total once and then divides it. Rounding each person up is convenient for cash or simple transfers, but several small increases can create a larger combined rounding adjustment. The result shows that extra amount separately.
