How to Calculate an Electricity Bill
Electricity usage is normally measured in kilowatt-hours, commonly called units. A simple bill multiplies units by the energy rate. Actual bills may also include fixed charges, meter charges, per-unit adjustments, taxes or duties, subsidies, arrears, and provider-specific rules.

What Is a Kilowatt-Hour (kWh)?
Power is measured in watts or kilowatts, while electrical energy combines power with time. One kilowatt-hour is the energy used by a 1,000-watt appliance running for one hour. It is also equal to a 100-watt appliance running for ten hours.

Flat tariff
Every unit uses the same energy rate. It is simple to calculate but may not match residential tariffs that increase with usage.
Progressive slab tariff
Each rate applies only to the units inside its band. Reaching a higher slab does not automatically reprice all earlier units.
Utilities can use other structures, including telescopic slabs, non-telescopic slabs, time-of-use pricing, demand charges, seasonal rates, sanctioned-load charges, and minimum bills. Confirm the method shown on your bill before relying on an estimate.

Estimating Electricity Use by Appliance
Nameplate wattage gives a useful starting point, but actual consumption may differ. Air conditioners, refrigerators, pumps, and heaters cycle according to thermostats or demand. Inverters and variable-speed devices change their power draw, while standby loads can consume energy even when a device appears off.
For a closer estimate, use measured wattage from a plug-in meter or smart energy monitor and compare the appliance total with your meter reading over the same period.
