How Unit Conversion Works
Unit conversion transforms a value from one measurement system into another using standardized mathematical relationships. Most conversions rely on fixed conversion factors — for example, 1 inch is defined as exactly 0.0254 meters by international agreement. To convert any value, you multiply by the factor from the source unit to the base unit, then multiply again from the base unit to the target unit.
Temperature conversions are an exception. Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin scales have different zero points and different interval sizes, so a simple multiplication factor cannot convert between them. Instead, linear equations account for the offset: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32, and K = °C + 273.15. Metric vs Imperial: Key Differences
The metric system (SI — Système International d'Unités) is the globally dominant measurement standard, used officially by every country except the United States, Myanmar, and Liberia. Its decimal-based structure means units scale cleanly by powers of 10, making calculations straightforward and consistent.
The imperial system (and the closely related US customary system) uses non-decimal relationships rooted in historical and practical origins: 12 inches to a foot (from the length of a human foot), 3 feet to a yard, 1,760 yards to a mile, 16 ounces to a pound. These irregular ratios make mental arithmetic harder and unit conversion errors more common, which is one reason the scientific and medical communities worldwide use metric units exclusively.
