How the Savings Goal Calculator Works

A savings goal connects a future target with the money already set aside, the time remaining, and a regular contribution. In Required monthly amount mode, the calculator first estimates how the current balance may grow and then solves for the month-end deposit needed to cover the rest of the goal.

Planning relationship

Future goal = Growth of current savings + Growth of monthly contributions

Contributions are assumed at each month-end and returns are compounded monthly. At 0% return, the calculation becomes a straightforward savings plan with no investment growth.

Choose the Right Planning Mode

  • Required monthly amount: use this when the target and deadline are fixed and you want to know the monthly deposit.
  • Check my monthly amount: use this when you already have a savings budget and want to see the likely balance, shortfall, or surplus.

Return Assumptions and Risk

The expected return is an assumption, not a promise. A short-term emergency fund may need stability and access, while a longer goal may allow a different mix of savings and investments. Compare a 0% case with a cautious growth case instead of relying on one optimistic number.

The model uses a constant monthly rate and regular deposits. Actual balances can differ because returns vary, deposits may be missed or changed, and products may include fees, taxes, lock-ins, contribution limits, or penalties.

When to Adjust a Goal for Inflation

Enable inflation adjustment when the amount represents something priced today, such as education, a vehicle, a home deposit, travel, or another future purchase. The calculator increases the target over the selected period. Leave it off when you already entered the future amount you expect to need.
