What Is a QR Code?

A QR code (Quick Response code) is a two-dimensional barcode that stores data in a grid of black and white squares. Unlike traditional barcodes that only encode numbers in a single row, QR codes can encode thousands of characters — including URLs, plain text, contact details, Wi-Fi credentials, and more — in both horizontal and vertical directions.

Invented in 1994 by Denso Wave for tracking automotive parts, QR codes became ubiquitous in marketing, payments, and logistics. Today, every modern smartphone can scan a QR code natively through its camera app, making them one of the most accessible ways to bridge physical and digital experiences.

How QR Codes Work

QR codes encode data using a combination of black modules (squares) arranged in a square grid on a white background. The pattern includes finder patterns in three corners for orientation, alignment patterns for distortion correction, and timing patterns that help scanners decode the grid accurately.

Error correction is built in at four levels — Low (7%), Medium (15%), Quartile (25%), and High (30%). Higher correction allows the code to remain scannable even if up to 30% of its surface is obscured, scratched, or dirty. This is why we default to High correction for all QR codes generated on this tool.

How to Create a QR Code

  1. Select a QR code type from the tabs above (URL, Wi-Fi, Contact Card, etc.).
  2. Enter your content — a URL, phone number, Wi-Fi credentials, or vCard details.
  3. Optionally customise the foreground and background colours and the output size.
  4. Click Download SVG QR Code for print-ready vector art, or Download PNG for digital use.

QR Codes for Business

Businesses use QR codes to reduce friction in the customer journey. A single scan can open a product page, trigger a phone call, launch a payment flow, or automatically connect a visitor to the office Wi-Fi. Because QR codes need no app install and work with every modern phone camera, adoption is immediate and universal.

Common business applications include: storefront window promotions, event badges, conference booth displays, table tents in retail environments, and product packaging. Each use case benefits from the SVG format — one file, infinitely scalable, always crisp.

QR Codes for Marketing Campaigns

Print advertising traditionally had no way to track engagement or send users to a digital destination. QR codes changed that. Add a QR code to a poster, newspaper ad, or direct mail piece and you instantly turn a static medium into an interactive touchpoint.

For campaign tracking, encode a UTM-tagged URL into your QR code — for example, https://www.nvrnexus.com?utm_source=poster&utm_campaign=summer24. Every scan becomes a trackable event in your analytics platform without any additional infrastructure.

QR Codes for Restaurants and Menus

Digital menus accessed via QR code have become standard in hospitality. Restaurants update menu items, prices, and availability in real time by simply updating the destination page — the printed QR code never changes. This saves printing costs and eliminates outdated menus.

Table cards, window stickers, and receipt footers are the most common placements. Use a high error correction level (H) so the code scans reliably even if the card gets slightly wet, worn, or smudged.

QR Codes for Business Cards

A vCard QR code on your business card lets anyone tap to save your contact details — name, company, phone, email, and website — directly to their phone in one scan. No typos, no manual entry. Select the Contact Card type above to generate yours in seconds.

Wi-Fi QR Codes

Sharing Wi-Fi passwords verbally or on handwritten signs is inconvenient and error-prone. A Wi-Fi QR code encodes your network name (SSID), password, and encryption type into a single scannable pattern. Guests scan once and connect instantly — no password visible, no typing required.

Print it on a guest card, frame it at your reception desk, or stick it inside a rental property. Use our Wi-Fi tab, enter your network details, and download.

Benefits of SVG QR Codes

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) files describe shapes as mathematical paths rather than a fixed grid of pixels. The result is a file that renders identically at 2 cm on a business card and 2 metres on a banner, with zero blurring, pixelation, or scanning failure.

For comparison, a PNG QR code printed beyond its native resolution becomes pixelated — individual modules blur together and scanners can fail. SVG eliminates this risk entirely, making it the professional standard for any QR code intended for print.

Best Practices for QR Code Printing

  • Minimum size: 2 × 2 cm for handheld scanning, 10 × 10 cm+ for outdoor or wall signage.
  • Contrast: Use a dark foreground on a light background. Avoid low-contrast colour combinations — scanners need at least 40% contrast ratio.
  • Quiet zone: Keep a clear white border of at least 4 modules around the QR code. Our SVG output includes this by default.
  • Test before printing: Scan your downloaded QR code with at least two different phones before ordering a print run.
  • Error correction H: Always use High error correction for physical print — it tolerates logos, wear, and partial damage.
  • Shorten URLs: Shorter content = less dense QR code = easier scanning. Use a URL shortener for long links.
