How to Use the Aspect Ratio Calculator

Enter a width and height to simplify their relationship, or select a familiar preset. Then choose which pixel dimension you already know. The calculator finds the matching side without changing the selected proportion. The preview and reference table update immediately.

  1. 1

    Set the ratio

Use dimensions such as 1920 × 1080, ratio parts such as 16 × 9, or choose a preset.

  2. 2

    Enter one dimension

Select known width or known height and add the pixel value you need to preserve.

  3. 3

    Use the result

Copy the matching size, use the CSS value, or export the common-dimensions table.

What an Aspect Ratio Tells You

An aspect ratio compares width with height; it does not describe one fixed resolution. A 16:9 frame can be 1280 × 720, 1920 × 1080, or any other proportional size. The first value describes horizontal units and the second describes vertical units. Landscape ratios are wider than they are tall, portrait ratios are taller than they are wide, and 1:1 is square.

Width and Height Formulas

Find height

height = width × ratio height ÷ ratio width

Find width

width = height × ratio width ÷ ratio height

To simplify an integer ratio, divide both values by their greatest common divisor. For example, 1920 and 1080 share a divisor of 120, so 1920:1080 becomes 16:9. The decimal representation is width divided by height: 16 ÷ 9 is approximately 1.7778.

These are common examples, not permanent publishing rules. Platforms and placements can change their recommended dimensions, file sizes, and safe areas, so verify the current specification before exporting.

Ratio Changes, Cropping, and Letterboxing

Matching dimensions preserve a source only when the source already has the same ratio. Converting a 4:3 image to 16:9 requires a design decision: crop part of the image, fit the complete image with empty space, or distort it. Stretching changes the shape of the content and is usually undesirable. Use a crop or fit workflow when ratios differ.

Private, Browser-Based Calculation

All ratio math, previews, copying, and CSV creation happen locally in your browser. No image or video upload is required because the tool only processes the dimensions you enter.
